Protect Our Urban Forest

Emerald ash borer beetle is sweeping across Midwest states infesting native ash trees in our backyards and commercial properties. We are now faced with the prospect of losing our trees, as well as the expense of removing and replacing, along with the loss to property value and shade.

However, there are additional options for ash tree owners. This site provides information about the value of your tree, the costs of removal, replacement and insecticide protection treatments to fight emerald ash borer.

Key Points and Recommendations

• Insecticides effectively protect ash trees from emerald ash borer (EAB).

•Emamectin benzoate, an insecticide that kills emerald ash borer, is the only product tested to date that controls EAB for more than one year with a single application. It also provides a higher level of control than other products in side-by-side studies. This product is injected into the trunk of the tree and can only be administered by a professional.

•Xytect soil treatments, an insecticide that also kills emerald ash borer, can be administered by homeowners. This soil treatment is labeled for application at a higher maximum rate than other imidacloprid formulations. Other imidacloprids are not as powerful.
